Teaching Problem-Solving as a Transferable Skill

Employers consistently rank problem-solving among the most critical workplace skills. Yet, for many learners, it remains an abstract concept they struggle to articulate or apply outside of a specific classroom task. Developing this skill is a key part of fostering learner participation and development, preparing them for the complexities of modern work and life.

Effective practice involves teaching problem-solving not as an accidental byproduct of technical training, but as an explicit, structured, and transferable process. Here’s how to embed it meaningfully across your provision.

Deconstruct the Problem-Solving Process

Learners benefit from a simple, memorable framework they can use in any context. Avoid overly complex academic models and opt for a practical, four-stage approach that you can teach and reinforce across subjects.

  • Define the Real Problem: Coach learners to look beyond the surface. What is the actual issue, not just the symptom? Questions to ask include: What is the gap between the current state and the desired state? Who is affected? What are the constraints and non-negotiables?
  • Explore Potential Solutions: Encourage divergent thinking before converging on a plan. This stage is about generating options, not judging them. Prompt learners to consider: What are the obvious solutions? What are some less obvious ones? What resources are available? Who could we ask for help or input?
  • Act and Implement: This is where a decision is made and a plan is put into action. It involves sequencing steps, allocating tasks (if in a group), and monitoring progress. It’s the practical test of the chosen solution.
  • Reflect on the Outcome: The learning solidifies here. Was the problem solved? What were the unintended consequences? What was learned about the process? What would you do differently next time? This metacognitive step is vital for transferring the skill.

Create Authentic Problem-Solving Scenarios

Abstract or purely theoretical problems have limited impact. To build a skill that sticks, learners need to wrestle with challenges that feel real and have tangible stakes. This strengthens both their technical abilities and their wider development.

  • Use Employer-Set Challenges: Work with stakeholders to source real-world, anonymised problems from their businesses. This adds immense value and context for learners and apprentices.
  • Develop 'What If' Scenarios: Create short case studies based on common workplace dilemmas: a key team member is off sick, a client has complained, a delivery hasn't arrived, a piece of software keeps crashing.
  • Leverage Project-Based Learning: Design projects that have built-in ambiguity or potential obstacles, requiring learners to identify and solve problems as they arise rather than following a simple instruction set.
  • Analyse Past Failures: Use case studies of projects or business ideas that failed. Ask learners to work backwards to identify the core problems and map out how a different process could have led to a better outcome.

Model the Thinking, Not Just the Answer

Explicitly showing learners how an expert thinks through a problem is more powerful than just giving them the solution. This practice is central to high-quality teaching, training and curriculum delivery.

  • Think Aloud: When you encounter a problem in a session- a tech glitch, a confusing question- verbalise your thought process. "Okay, the projector isn't working. First, I'll check the most common issue, which is the cable. If that doesn't work, my next step is..."
  • Use Worked Examples and Non-Examples: Provide learners with examples of both well-defined and poorly-defined problems. Show them a weak set of explored solutions versus a comprehensive one. This helps them recognise what good looks like.
  • Scaffold with Frameworks: Initially, provide learners with templates or worksheets based on your Define-Explore-Act-Reflect model. As they become more proficient, they will internalise the process and require less structure.

Focus Feedback on the Process

When assessing problem-solving tasks, shift the focus from 'did they get the right answer?' to 'how well did they use the process?'. This reinforces that the method is the transferable skill.

  • Praise the Questioning: Give positive reinforcement when a learner asks insightful questions to define the problem more clearly.
  • Comment on the Options: In feedback, note where learners generated a good range of creative solutions before settling on one.
  • Discuss the Rationale: Ask learners to justify their chosen solution over the other options they considered. This probes their critical thinking and decision-making.
  • Make Reflection a Requirement: Build time for reflection into the end of every problem-solving task. Ask learners to explicitly state what they learned about the process and how they could apply it elsewhere.
