Strategies to Minimise Extraneous Load
Reducing extraneous load is the most immediate way to improve the clarity of your teaching and training. It involves removing distractions and streamlining the presentation of information so learners can focus on the content.
- Simplify Your Materials: Use clear, uncluttered slides and documents. Avoid walls of text, decorative images that don't add meaning, and distracting fonts or colour schemes.
- Use the 'Modality Principle': Present information using both visual and verbal channels. For example, explain a diagram rather than just displaying the diagram with lots of text labels. Crucially, avoid simply reading text verbatim from a slide, as this redundancy creates unnecessary load.
- Integrate Information: Place text labels directly next to the parts of a diagram they describe, rather than using a separate key. This saves the learner from having to hold information in their working memory while searching for the corresponding part.

How to Manage Intrinsic Load
While you can't change the inherent complexity of a topic, you can manage how learners encounter it. This involves careful sequencing and scaffolding to build knowledge progressively.
- Chunk Complex Information: Break down large topics or complex procedures into smaller, more manageable parts. Teach and check understanding of each chunk before moving to the next.
- Use Worked Examples: When introducing a new problem-solving process, provide a full, step-by-step worked example. This allows learners to focus on the process without having to problem-solve simultaneously.
- Sequence from Simple to Complex: Start with simple, self-contained problems before introducing more complex variations that require integrating multiple concepts.
- Scaffold Effectively: Gradually fade support as learners become more competent. Move from fully worked examples to partially completed examples, and finally to independent practice.
Techniques to Maximise Germane Load
Once you have reduced extraneous load and managed intrinsic load, you can focus on activities that promote deep processing and schema construction.
- Prompt Self-Explanation: Regularly ask learners questions like, "How did you get that answer?" or "Can you explain that concept in your own words?" This forces them to process the information actively.
- Use Varied Practice: Once a concept is understood, provide practice problems that vary in context. This helps learners generalise their knowledge and apply it more flexibly.
- Encourage Connections: Explicitly ask learners to connect new information to what they already know. For example, "How does this principle of customer service relate to what we learned about communication last week?"
