This isn't about shoehorning activities in; it's about identifying where they already exist or could logically fit.

  • Form a cross-departmental team: Involve vocational tutors, assessors, and specialist English, maths, and digital skills teachers. Their combined expertise is essential for spotting credible links.
  • Map the vocational journey: Review schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment documents.   • Promote a coaching culture: Encourage peer observation and support, where staff can share good practice and build confidence together.

Make Skills Contextual and Relevant

Learners and apprentices are more likely to engage with English, maths, and digital skills when they can see the direct relevance to their career goals. Abstract concepts become powerful tools when applied to authentic, industry-specific problems.

  • Use industry-specific language: Instead of 'fractions', talk about 'mixing ratios for hair colour'. Instead of 'area', talk about 'calculating the amount of plasterboard needed for a room'.
  • Solve real-world problems: Base activities on genuine workplace scenarios. This could involve learners costing a job, creating a project plan using digital software, or writing a risk assessment for a practical task.
  • Involve employers: Ask employers what English, maths, and digital skills they value most in new recruits. Use their feedback to shape your curriculum and ensure learners are developing the competencies that will help them secure and sustain employment.
  • Leverage technology naturally: Integrate the digital tools of the trade into everyday teaching. This could be booking systems for hospitality, CAD software for engineering, or accounting platforms for business learners.

Use Assessment to Reinforce and Evaluate

Assessment is a powerful tool for reinforcing the importance of embedded skills. By including these competencies in vocational assessments, you send a clear message that they are integral to occupational competence, not an optional extra.

  • Integrate skills into assignment criteria: Explicitly include criteria related to communication, calculation, or digital proficiency within vocational assignments.
  • Assess process as well as product: During practical observations, pay attention to how learners communicate with peers, follow written instructions, or use digital devices to source information.
  • Provide holistic feedback: When marking work, comment on the quality of written communication, the accuracy of calculations, and the effectiveness of digital presentation, alongside vocational knowledge and skills.
  • Review assessment outcomes: Analyse whether learners struggling with vocational elements also have underlying English, maths, or digital skills needs. Use this insight to provide targeted support.
