However, its use brings significant risks, particularly concerning assessment integrity and awarding body regulations. For FE and Skills providers, navigating this new landscape requires a clear, principled approach. This post offers practical guidance on leveraging AI for planning while maintaining robust academic standards.

Where AI Excels in Lesson Preparation

Used as a creative partner or an administrative assistant, AI can significantly enhance the planning process without compromising quality. The key is for the tutor to remain in control, using their professional judgement to adapt and refine AI-generated content for their specific learners.

Safe and effective uses include:

  • Generating Ideas: Brainstorming engaging lesson starters, plenaries, or activities to check for understanding. For example, asking for 'five creative ways to introduce the topic of safer recruitment'.
  • Differentiation: Creating varied resources tailored to different learner needs. AI can quickly simplify complex texts, generate glossaries of key terms, or produce multiple examples of a concept at varying levels of difficulty.
  • Structuring Content: Drafting potential learning objectives or success criteria based on a topic. Tutors can then refine these to ensure they are ambitious and directly aligned with the curriculum's intent.
  • Creating Scenarios: Producing realistic case studies, role-play scenarios, or discussion prompts for non-assessed activities. This is particularly useful for exploring topics like professional behaviours or British values in a vocational context.

The Red Line: AI and Assessed Work

The most critical boundary relates to formal assessment. Awarding body regulations are clear: the work a learner submits for a qualification must be their own. Using AI to generate any part of an assessed submission constitutes malpractice and undermines the validity of the entire qualification.

To manage the risks effectively, providers need a whole-provider strategy built on clear principles and continuous professional learning. This ensures consistency and protects the integrity of your provision.

Consider implementing these guardrails:

  • Develop a Clear Policy: Create a simple, accessible policy on the use of AI for both staff and learners. Define what constitutes acceptable use (e.g., brainstorming, research) and unacceptable use (e.g., generating assessed work).
  • Provide Staff Training: Equip your teams with professional learning on ethical AI use. This should cover not just the 'how' but also the 'why' and 'when not to'. Focus on developing staff confidence in critically evaluating and adapting AI outputs.
  • Champion Professional Judgement: Reinforce the message that AI is a tool to support, not replace, the tutor's expertise. The knowledge of individual learner starting points, needs, and goals is something only a human professional can provide.
  • Model Ethical Use: Encourage tutors to be transparent with learners about how they might use AI to create resources. This models responsible practice and opens up dialogue about digital citizenship.

Fostering AI Literacy for Learners

Banning AI entirely is unrealistic and unhelpful. Part of preparing learners for their next steps is teaching them to use modern tools responsibly and ethically. This is a crucial element of their wider development.

Integrate AI literacy into your curriculum by:

  • Teaching Critical Evaluation: Show learners how to question AI outputs, check for 'hallucinations' (false information), and cross-reference with reliable sources.
  • Focusing on Process, Not Just Output: Shift the focus of some tasks to reward the process of research, planning, and drafting, rather than just the final product.
  • Reinforcing Academic Integrity: Use the rise of AI as an opportunity to have explicit conversations about the value of creating original work, developing an authentic voice, and the principles of referencing.
